Sedation Dentistry in Bowling Green, OH

Dental fear and anxiety are the most common reasons for people to delay dental treatment. Though the current dental and medical technologies allow dentistry to be performed comfortably, the environment in a dental office may not be appealing to everyone. We provide a variety of sedation agents for our apprehensive patients. We also offer streaming music and noise cancelling headphones to help our patients tune out the noise and relax.

Dental Implants in Bowling Green, OH

Dental implants are the closest replacement to a natural tooth available in modern dentistry, and our Bowling Green office handles the entire process start to finish — no referral to a specialist in Toledo or Findlay. Our 3D CBCT imaging system lets our doctors plan implant placement with precision before treatment begins, and because our team is trained in both surgical placement and sedation, the surgery and the restoration happen in the same familiar office.

We place single-tooth implants, implant-supported bridges, and implant-retained dentures for patients whose lower dentures no longer stay seated. If you have been told you need to see an oral surgeon for implants, ask us first — in most cases we can complete the treatment here. Complimentary implant consultations are available; call 419-352-2569.

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a procedure that can often save a painful or infected tooth from being extracted. Performed under local anesthetic, sometimes with sedation, it eliminates the pain and infection from most teeth. It is often an excellent alternative to tooth extraction. We are able to treat most cases in our office in one appointment.

Routine Cleanings & Preventive Care in Bowling Green, OH

We recommend patients receive a routine cleaning at least every six months, or more frequently if they have periodontal disease or other dental health issues. During your cleaning, we will remove plaque and tartar and polish the teeth for a brighter, healthier smile. We will also examine the smile for any signs of decay, gum disease, oral cancer, or other problems. We may need to take x-rays or other imaging to help us detect if any issues exist that cannot be seen during a visual exam. During the appointment, our team will provide you with instructions as to how you can improve your at-home dental care so you can play an active role in achieving and maintaining a healthy smile!

Whether you need a full denture, a partial, a reline, or a repair on a denture that has cracked, our Bowling Green office handles denture care in-house. For patients frustrated by a lower denture that shifts while eating or speaking, we place implant-retained dentures that lock the appliance in place using two to four implants — a permanent fix rather than another tube of adhesive. We make every effort to see urgent patients the same day. After hours, calling 419-352-2569 connects you with instructions for reaching our on-call doctor.

Trained for Trauma, Not Just Routine Dentistry

Dr. Ryan Phipps and Dr. Jenna Shevlin both completed hospital-based General Practice Residencies at Miami Valley Hospital, with rotations in trauma care and anesthesia and advanced training in oral surgery and root canal therapy. For several decades, our dentists have also cared for Bowling Green State University athletes, including treatment of dental and facial trauma.

With on-site 3D CBCT imaging, much of the care an emergency requires, from root canals to extractions, can be handled right here in our office. When a case needs a specialist or hospital, we’ll tell you plainly and help you get there.

Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

Severe or throbbing toothaches

Abscesses, swelling, and gum infections

Cracked, chipped, or broken teeth

Knocked-out or loosened teeth

Sports injuries and facial trauma

Lost fillings or crowns

Wisdom tooth pain and post-extraction complications

Tooth pain that fades doesn’t always mean the problem is gone. An infected nerve can stop hurting while the infection continues, so schedule an evaluation even if the pain has eased.

What to Do Before You Reach Our Office

    • Toothache: Rinse with warm salt water, floss gently around the tooth, and take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed on the label. Don’t place aspirin on the gums.
    • Swelling: Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek.
    • Knocked-out adult tooth: Hold it by the crown, not the root, and rinse it briefly if dirty. Place it back in the socket if you can. If not, store it in milk or inside your cheek and call us immediately.
    • Broken tooth or lost crown: Save the pieces or crown and bring them with you.

When to Go to the Emergency Room

Call 911 or go to the ER if you have swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing, swelling spreading toward your eye or neck, a high fever with facial swelling, bleeding that won’t stop, or a possible jaw fracture or head injury. Wood County Hospital is in the same medical complex as our office. Once you’re stable, contact us for the dental side of your care.

Do you offer same-day emergency dental appointments?

We make every effort to evaluate urgent dental problems the same day. Call 419-352-2569 as early as possible and describe your symptoms so our team can prioritize your visit. Depending on the problem and our schedule, treatment may begin at that visit or be scheduled promptly afterward.

Is a toothache considered a dental emergency?

A toothache is urgent if the pain is severe or throbbing, keeps you awake, or comes with swelling, fever, or a bad taste in your mouth. These can be signs of infection. Mild sensitivity that comes and goes should still be evaluated, but it can usually wait for a regular appointment.

Do you treat sports injuries and facial trauma?

Yes. Dr. Ryan Phipps and Dr. Jenna Shevlin completed hospital residencies that included trauma care rotations, and for several decades our dentists have cared for Bowling Green State University athletes, including dental and facial trauma. We also make custom athletic mouthguards to help prevent injuries.

What should I do if I have a dental emergency after hours?

Call our main number at 419-352-2569. After business hours, you’ll receive instructions for reaching our on-call doctor, who can advise you on next steps. If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or a serious head or jaw injury, go to the emergency room or call 911.

Can you save a knocked-out tooth?

Often, yes, if it’s treated quickly. Handle the tooth by the crown, rinse it briefly if dirty, and try to place it back in the socket. If you can’t, store it in milk or inside your cheek and call us immediately. Your chances of saving the tooth are best when you’re seen as soon as possible.
